Nothing compares to the sight of Gimmelwald resting on a cliff, with the Alps in the background – and you’ll be able to see it from a one-of-a-kind vantage point. Additionally, though Interlaken and the Lauterbrunnen Valley are hot spots for a variety of outdoor adventures, the Via Ferrata offers a chance to see incredible sights without worrying too much about complicated gear. While you can expect to work up a little sweat, this trip is suitable for a group of people who may vary in age, fitness, and ability.
When planning your trip, make sure to book a mountain guide to take you through the Via Ferrata to gain the full experience; one is required to cross the Tyrolean Traverse. The hike itself lasts around 3 hours, so be sure to bring plenty of water and dress in long plants and dedicated hiking or trail boots. The highest point of the hike is 1800 meters, but you will descend through the course of the hike. If you’re unaccustomed to high altitudes, consider spending time in the higher elevation area beforehand or be prepared to take extra time while hiking. Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, and travelers from outside this area are required to present a valid passport or visa to enter.
