The diversity of life found in Tambopata Nature Reserve is second to none, thanks in no small part to the unique and varied habitats found here. Lowland Amazon forest meets riverine forest, cloud forests and wet savannah, plus a number of oxbow lakes. Thirteen endangered species live here, including the giant otter, jaguar, and harpy eagle.
If you want to visit Tambopata Nature Reserve you must have had a yellow fever vaccination and bring sufficient malaria tablets to cover the trip. It is also highly advised that you bring insect repellent as the effectiveness of the nets provided is not guaranteed. It is also advisable to bring toilet paper, as many lodges won't stock it.
As with most tropical forests, the reserve is hot and humid year round. However from June through August, its unique location near the Andes means the area is subject to periodic cold spells, during which temperatures can fall as low as 9c.
At present Cusco is a safe city with limited or no criminal activities. Local population is generally friendly and police are cordial to deal with. It is however recommended that you keep your belongings safe.
