Ollantaytambo boasts some of the best preserved Inca ruins in Peru, and offers an unrivaled glimpse into 15th century life. The terraces are some of the most stunning in South America, and the surrounding countryside is an attraction in itself.
As with many attractions in Southern Peru, you should be mindful of the altitude. If you begin to feel unwell then tak rest, and drink plenty of water. We would recommend spending at least 48 hours in Cusco before heading to the ruins.
If you take a public mini bus then be aware there is unlikely to be a toilet stop on route.
You will find that early to mid morning the ruins tend to be more crowded, due to the large number of day trips pausing here on the way to Machu Picchu. Wait until after 11am to have the place to yourself!
At present Cusco is a safe city with limited or no criminal activities. Local population is generally friendly and police are cordial to deal with. It is however recommended that you keep your belongings safe.
