Machu Picchu is one of the world's most impressively preserved ancient sites, and showcases the pinnacle of Inca engineering. Set in a stunning Andean location and spanning more than 100 square miles, the site exceeds the hype.
In 2019 the Peruvian government bought in new, stricter regulations for visiting Machu Picchu. If you book independently then you must select an entry time – you will have four hours from then to explore the site. Even if you decide to travel without a tour agency, you are only able to enter the ruins with an official guide, who can be found at the gates.
You must bring an official copy of your passport in order to be granted entry – copies and photographs will not be accepted!
The altitude of Machu Picchu is very high, so we would recommend spending a few days in Cusco before your visit to acclimatize.
At present Cusco is a safe city with limited or no criminal activities. Local population is generally friendly and police are cordial to deal with. It is however recommended that you keep your belongings safe.
