Walking tours are the best way to experience the city of Cusco, with its ancient cobbled streets, Inca stonework, and Colonial cathedrals. With the added benefit of a local guide, visitors will learn about the city's vast history, and what the future holds for the broader community.
Although many tours are listed as free, guides expect to be tipped. A standard tip is around $10 for 1 – 2 hours, but some people give up to $50.
At an altitude of 3,400 meters, it is common for people to experience mild altitude sickness when they arrive in Cusco. Drink plenty of water and ensure you take it slow the first couple of days.
The city is mostly flat, but there are some hilly areas, so you should ensure your shoes are suitable for gentle climbs. Unfortunately walking tours are not suitable for those with mobility issues.
As with any built up area, be vigilant of your possessions and do not carry any more cash than needed.
At present Cusco is a safe city with limited or no criminal activities. Local population is generally friendly and police are cordial to deal with. It is however recommended that you keep your belongings safe.
