At an altitude of 3,400 meters, it is common for people to experience mild altitude sickness when they arrive in Cusco. Drink plenty of water and ensure you take it slow the first couple of days.
Although the city enjoys many modern amenities, you should not drink the water. Luckily bottled water is readily available, and relatively cheap.
As with any built up area, be vigilant of your possessions and do not carry any more cash than needed.
At present Cusco is a safe city with limited or no criminal activities. Local population is generally friendly and police are cordial to deal with. It is however recommended that you keep your belongings safe.
