The Char Dham Yatra is a spiritual and cultural journey that involves traveling to the four shrines of utmost religious importance in the Hindu mythology in the state of Uttarakhand, namely - Kedarnath (dedicated to Lord Shiva), Badrinath (dedicated to Lord Vishnu), Yamunotri (dedicated to Goddess Yamuna), Gangotri (dedicated to Goddess Ganga).
The best time for the 4 Dham Yatra tour is definitely in the summer, between the months of April to June. The Dham start opening late April and following that you can prepare your itinerary.
The significance of the Char Dham Yatra lies in its duality of being a difficult-grade adventure through the risky terrain of the Garhwal Himalayas as well as being the ultimate spiritual journey of self-discovery and attaining salvation. Additionally, you can discover age old customs of the people of Uttarakhand and explore the natural beauty of the place.
The Char Dham Yatra starts on 3rd May, 2023 and the tentative closing date is 26th November, 2023. However, the Kedarnath and Badrinath Dhams will open on 25th April and 27th April respectively.
You have 2 options to complete the Char Dham Yatra circuit and temple visits. You can either hit the roadways and drive and hike to complete the Char Dham Yatra in 10-12 days. Alternately, you can take a helicopter and finish the Char Dham Yatra circuit in 4-5 days.
In 2023, the Char Dham Yatra starts on May 3, 2023 and ends on November 26, 2023, tentatively.
You need to pack light but exhaustively for your Char Dham Yatra Darshan. Carry enough cash, a combo of loose-fitting warm and cool clothes, sturdy footwear, personal hygiene items, first aid kit, water bottle, snacks, torch, and valid ID proofs.
According to the Hindu mythology, some of the upper Gods and Goddesses of the pantheon have their shrines located as the Char Dhams, like Lord Shiva - Kedarnath, Lord Vishnu - Badrinath, Goddess Yamuna - Yamunotri, and Goddess Ganga - Gangotri. So it is believed that you can do a holistic worship and offer your prayers at these shrines to cleanse your soul and wash away your sins. The goal of the Hindus who embark on this sacred pilgrimage is spiritual awakening and attaining divine salvation or Moksha.
You should be physically and mentally fit because the Char Dham Yatra is a highly demanding journey. You must prepare well to avoid altitude sickness like AMS. Still, if you witness the symptoms, you should immediately start descending and reach a nearby hospital or care center. Consult your doctor and carry medications and a first-aid kit to avoid medical issues during the journey.
Another thing is listening closely to weather forecasts to anticipate climatic conditions before embarking on the Char Dham Yatra. Once you have started the tour, you should carry waterproof clothes, sweaters, etc. to protect yourself against extreme weather conditions.
The typical duration of the Char Dham Yatra is about 10-12 days, if you are walking, hiking, and driving. On the other hand, it can be completed within 4-5 days if you are availing of the helicopter service.
The month of May is the best for the Char Dham Yatra because of pleasant weather conditions.
The Char Dham Yatra involves visiting the four shrines, performing religious rituals, etc. which takes up a lot of your time, effort, and resources, and so it is impossible to complete the Char Dham Yatra in one day.
