The Alpamayo Circuit will be without a doubt one of the highlights of your climbing career, combining a beautiful trek through the Santa Cruz Valley and a technical climb to the summit of the Alpamayo peak. While the climb is challenging, mostly at 45 degrees and more on ice and snow, you will be rewarded with incredible views from the top of this remarkably shaped ice pyramid.
Summiting of Alpamayo should be attempted only by acclimatized and experienced alpine climbers – remember that less than half of the climbers make it to the top and that all companies will require that you have previous climbing knowledge. You will also need adequate equipment – ask your tour company for a list of what they provide and what you will have to bring. If you are climbing on your own, don’t forget to bring a tent, a satellite phone, cooking equipment, etc; and to get written permission from park officials. Finally, make sure that your insurance covers climbing expeditions – most travel insurances require an extra for climbing at altitudes over 3000m.
