The Kanamo Peak Trek has its own charms that will captivate thrill-seekers and encourage them to embark on this adventure. At 5960 meters, the Kanamo Peak packs quite a punch. Even though it is trekkable, the way to the summit is laced with dangers in the form of snow and boulder moraine or scree. The summit climbing stretch might contain deep snow as well. Hence, it is always appealing to seasoned campaigners who want to display their trekking expertise, push the summit, and answer the adrenaline and thrill call. Since Spiti Valley is immensely offbeat and way less explored compared to Ladakh, you will enjoy peace and solitude while exploring the mighty peaks and making your way across the dramatic landscape with a brown, barren effect to it. The weather is primarily pleasant, and it welcomes every trekker to test their mettle.
The Kanamo Peak Trek best time ranges from June to end-October. The ideal time for trekking is in stark contrast to the adventures in Uttarakhand. This is attributed to the geographic location of the Spiti Valley. While the rest of India enjoys the monsoon showers, Spiti, being located in the rain shadow region or the leeward side of the mountains, remains dry. Hence, the weather remains quite pleasant during this time, which is ideal for climbing the Kanamo Peak’s summit. Plan the Kanamo Peak Trek itinerary well to accommodate all your touristy aspirations of visiting the quaint hamlets spread across Spiti, the Key Monastery, the world’s highest post office at Hikkim, etc.
Looming behind the Kibber and Tashi Gang villages in Spiti Valley, Kanamo or the ‘White Lady’ is one of the highest trekkable peaks that extends to nearly 6000 meters and does not require technical knowledge of mountaineering or rock climbing. However, this trek is graded difficult- especially the part that stretches from the Kanamo Base Camp to the summit. It is because the region is covered with loose snow and boulder moraine or scree. The terrain is quite hazardous in itself and hard to tread on. Though proper acclimatization at that height typically does the trick, one should be adequately fit to do the trek properly. For this, you need to build your cardiovascular endurance with a proper training regime at least three months before embarking on the trek. It should consist of regular skipping, swimming, stair climbing without breaks, cycling, and running. Apart from setting speed and destination targets, you should also utilize your time doing lower body strength and conditioning exercises and flexibility training to keep your muscles in great shape.
Next comes your gear and equipment requirements for this trek. The most important thing to have is a superior quality of high-ankle, sturdy trekking shoes with micro-studs that offer a good grip for you to travel on treacherous terrain. You can even carry crampons and other snow-trekking essentials if there is a high amount of snow in the topmost reaches of the Kanamo Peak. Leaving these aside, your essential gear should comprise a backpack (50-60 liters), a daypack (20-30 liters), a trekking pole or walking stick, headlamps with spare batteries, water bottle or hydration packs, water purification tablets, personal medical kit, and first-aid kits. Your clothing should also be wholesome, consisting of quick-dry, full-sleeve t-shirts, fleece jackets, woollen sweaters, down feather jackets, thermal inners for the top and bottom parts, quick-dry synthetic track pants, poncho, wind, and waterproof jackets and pants, etc. Your headgear should consist of a suncap, woollen cap, balaclava, neck gaiters, and sunglasses. You should carry extra pairs of cotton and woollen socks, as well as synthetic and woollen gloves to protect your fists. The toiletries should comprise moisturizers, sunscreen, excess toilet paper, wet wipes, biodegradable soap, toothpaste and toothbrush, hand sanitizers, antibacterial and antifungal powder, lip balm, and a quick-dry towel.
Take general precautions to initiate proper acclimatization with the help of guides. Avoid littering and respect local cultures, along with being sensitive towards the wildlife.
