The Hardergrat Trail is suitable for experienced hikers. Newer hikers and children will find the length, altitude, and lack of safety railings challenging and, more importantly, dangerous. At its highest point, hikers will be nearly 3,000m up; although most experienced hikers will have reached similar altitudes before, those who are unaccustomed to such thin air will want to take precautions. There are no places to refill water containers, so hikers should bring plenty of water for the day (3-4 liters), in addition to food and trekking poles. Lastly, Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, and travelers from outside this area are required to present a valid passport or visa to enter.
