For adventure lovers this remote and rugged trek is one of the most unforgettable hiking trips of their lifetime. For mountain photography enthusiasts, this is a must do for its picturesque campsites - banks of pristine glacial lakes, expansive meadows, next to Inca ruins. Home to six over 6000m peaks including Yerupaja (6,617m), Peru’s 2nd highest peak, and Siula Grande, made famous by Joe Simpson’s adventure classic “Touching the Void”, later made into a movie. Condor, the giant Andean bird, soaring overhead is a common sighting.
Since the trek involves traversing through a high-altitude region with multiple 4,500-4,800m passes, spending at least a day or two in Huaraz before commencing the trek is a must. Day hike to Lake 69 is a good way to acclimatise while enjoying some of the towering peaks of the Cordillera Blanca from close quarters. The temperature can drop to -10°C with warmer days; hence layered clothings are a must. Hike 5 to 8 hours daily. You should check with the operator/agency in case you prefer English speaking guides. Also, note that flights from Lima to Huaraz have been temporarily suspended. Plan to catch a bus from Lima.
In Huaraz you can contact the following - Medical: Clínica San Pablo North of town, this is the best medical care in Huaraz. Some doctors speak English; Police - Policìa de Turismo; Forex - Banco de la Nación, BCP, Interbank
