The Vilcabamba Traverse Route is a unique and undiscovered trek that leads experienced explorers through the Peruvian Andes. The hike is known for being one of the least touristy routes to Machu Picchu and the journey is filled with Inca ruins and the biodiverse natural beauty of Peru.
The important issues to consider include accommodation, food, high altitude and the difficult terrain. Along the route there are no facilities or official campsites, hikers will need to pack more supplies on the trip if they hike independently. The highest point that will be reached is 4,500m and there are 3 passes on this trek that take adventurers to stunning view points. However, be sure to acclimatize to the high altitudes before going on the Vilcabamba route to avoid sickness. The difficult terrain of the hike demands that visitors bring proper hiking clothing and supplies to go on this adventure.
At present Cusco is a safe city with limited or no criminal activities. Local population is generally friendly and police are cordial to deal with. It is however recommended that you keep your belongings safe.
