The Lares Route to Machu Picchu is the perfect route for hikers who have an interest in culture, nature, and prefer to walk somewhere with less tourists. Visitors are able to explore authentic Quechua communities in the Peruvian Andes while walking through the breathtaking mountainous scenery.
Before leaving for this trip, some of the important considerations are to become acclimatized, pack lightly for different weather types, and learn some words or phrases in Quechua. Prior to leaving on the trek, spend some time in Cusco to become familiar with being at such a high altitude and drink local coca tea to help with altitude sickness. Hiking through the Sacred Valley can be very warm during the day yet at night the temperature will drop significantly. Bring clothing that can be worn during the cold nights while camping in the Peruvian Andes. In the weaving villages that hikers will pass through the main language that is spoken is Quechuan, try to learn some words or phrases to communicate with the locals.
At present Cusco is a safe city with limited or no criminal activities. Local population is generally friendly and police are cordial to deal with. It is however recommended that you keep your belongings safe.
