The Classic Inca Trail is a unique combination of adventure and culture, one of the most popular hikes in the world and part of most bucket lists. Follows an ancient Inca trail and is the only route where the hikers get to enter through the famous Sun Gate just after sunrise and enjoy the descent to the magnificent Machu Picchu before the site starts getting crowded.
Entry restricted to approximately 200 hikers per day (500 less ~300 guides and porters); requires permit obtainable only through a tour provider. For the dry season (Apr - Oct), which is very popular, book at least 6 months in advance.
Before leaving on the Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, there are many aspects that should be considered such as the weather, the altitude, the packing list. We recommend that you spend a few days in Cusco to acclimatize to the high altitude. Most of the trail is uphill and hence requires good physical preparation. Pushing yourself too hard physically before adjusting to the new altitude could make you very sick. The weather during the peak season, from April to October, can vary greatly, hence be prepared for rainy, cold, and warm weather and bring hiking clothing that can be layered.
At present Cusco is a safe city with limited or no criminal activities. Local population is generally friendly and police are cordial to deal with. It is however recommended that you keep your belongings safe.
