The Salkantay Trek is the perfect hike for nature and history lovers, the route leads visitors through the Andes to Humantay lake, mountain glaciers, to mountain peaks, and historical ancient Inca ruins. Each day offers new beautiful sceneries and leads hikers to one of the seven world wonders, the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu.
Before leaving on the Salkantay Route to Machu Picchu, there are many aspects that should be considered such as the weather, the altitude, the packing list, and the entrance ticket to Machu Picchu. We recommend that you spend a few days in Cusco to acclimatize to the high altitude. Pushing yourself too hard physically before adjusting to the new altitude could make you very sick. In this route the weather during the peak season, from April to October, can vary greatly as you traverse through. Be prepared for rainy, cold, and warm weather and bring hiking clothing that can be layered. Bring enough food and water for the trek, there are villages along the way where supplies can be purchased at. Even though the Salkantay trek does not have a limit on the number of hikers, you will still need to purchase an entrance ticket to Machu Picchu prior to embarking on the hike. Make a note of the time on the ticket and do not miss the entrance time to the Inca ruins.
At present Cusco is a safe city with limited or no criminal activities. Local population is generally friendly and police are cordial to deal with. It is however recommended that you keep your belongings safe.
