This adventure attracts adrenalin seekers who are looking to do extreme sports such as mountain biking, zip lining, and river rafting while hiking to Machu Picchu. The Inca Jungle trail is unique for combining visiting historical sites with exploring the natural beauty of the Andes as it passes through the Jungle portion of the Andes.
Key considerations before departing on the Inca Jungle Trail are packing for the weather and acclimatizing to the high altitudes of Peruvian Andes. The trek leads hikers through the jungle region of the Andes. This micro climate could have many insects and it is important to bring a repellent. This trek also has the option to visit hot springs and go river rafting, hence bringing a bathing suit is essential. Even though the majority of the hike is not at a very high altitude, biking down from Abra Malaga Pass at 4,316 for a few hours could cause some adventurers to experience altitude sickness. It is best to acclimatize to the high altitudes by spending a couple of days in the city of Cusco prior to embarking on the Inca Jungle Trail trek.
At present Cusco is a safe city with limited or no criminal activities. Local population is generally friendly and police are cordial to deal with. It is however recommended that you keep your belongings safe.
