Phenomenal trekking near the Queen of the Dolomites

Perched at the top of northern Italy like a rock clad cathedral, the majestic stone spires of the Dolomites are one of the most spectacular natural wonders in Europe.

Beloved by walkers, climbers, skiers, and cyclists alike, the Dolomites are one of the top adventure regions in the world, and offer outdoor activities abound. The region’s four distinct seasons provide visitors with an ever changing program of adventure, from frozen hikes along frosty ridges, to epic hikes through lush green valleys and sun kissed mountain spires. With its astounding natural diversity and breathtaking scenery, it is hard to imagine a better place for trekking.

Spanning almost 16,000 km, this extraordinary region combines soaring rock faces, lush rolling valleys, and crystalline glaciers, and boasts 18 peaks that are 3,000m or higher. A network of emerald lakes and pristine rivers weave throughout the rocky landscape, enticing weary trekkers with their cool, clear waters.

Visitors love the Dolomites not only for their outstanding natural beauty, but also for the rich history that was forged here. The region was home to numerous Roman settlements, and during the second world war several key battles between the Italians and Austrians were fought here. Today it is still possible to visit the tunnels from the war in Lagazuoi, and explore the restored fort of Valparola. The historic landmarks around this region make for fantastic trekking destinations, especially when visited with a local guide.

Though there are several pretty towns to base yourself from, there is one that rules supreme over them all. Glamorous, cultured, and gloriously chic, Cortina d’Ampezzo is the undisputed Queen of the Southern Alps. Nestled deep within the southern Dolomitic Alps, overlooking the crystalline water of the Boite river, this stunning town delivers adrenaline pumping adventure the Italian way: dripping with elegance and flair.

It is possible to trek many of the most iconic peaks in the region from Cortina d’Ampezzo. One of the most popular is the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, a distinctive trio of rocky prominences which jutt into the clouds like huge stone fangs.

Its proximity to the town means it is possible to complete the trek as part of a day trip, with options to adjust the difficulty level to suit you. Explore-Share has a one day beginners option for groups of up to 8 people, which follows a leisurely trail through some of the best scenery surrounding the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

For a more immersive experience there are several multi-day options, which traverse deeper into the wilderness. Moon & Honey Travel have a great three day option, which navigates between popular huts within the Tre Cime di Lavaredo National Park.

Another well known peak is the Monte Popera, a 3046m high mountain known for providing several routes of varying difficulty to its summit. The most popular ascent runs via its west side, offering stunning views of the surrounding Alps. Explore-Share runs a three day, specialist photography trek, which takes hikers to the summit of Monte Popera via Tre Cime, the Monte Paterno and the Croda dei Toni.

For a guided trek which covers lots of ground, the Dolomites Trek 7 day Cortina circuit is a fantastic option. Starting and finishing in Cortina D’Ampezzo, this week-long trek passes through Alpine meadows, bucolic high pastures, serene woodland, and over rocky ridges. Those used to hiking at an intermediate level or higher will enjoy this trek, with several challenging ascents and a maximum hiking time of around 8 hours per day. Hotel stays in pretty villages including Pratopiazza and Misurina.

For an even larger challenge, check out the 9 day trek from Cortina d’Ampezzo to Balzona, operated by Explore-Share. This challenging journey delivers high rewards, passing through the golden Croda Da Lago, the Passo Di Falzarego, the towering Arabba, the Val Gardena, and the Sasso Lungo Massif. The group will hike between 5 – 8 hours a day, covering between 9 to 17 kilometers per day, with elevations from 320 to 1,273 meters. Overnight stays at mountain huts and local guest houses are provided.

If you are traveling with kids, then fear not! There are plenty of options suitable for families in the vicinity. Mountain Guide and Alpinist Giovanni Orlando has several popular guided treks available from Cortina D’Ampezzo, including a one day Via Ferrata at Fanes Waterfalls. This tour is designed specially for families or first-time climbers, and explores the passage behind the First Waterfall of Rio Fanes. Following a simple rock climb to the route, visitors will have time to explore the hidden world behind the crashing falls, and learn about the area’s history.

Another option from Giovanni Orlando is his one day trek through the Lagazuoi gallery and the Kaisejager path, which offers stunning views, accessible ferrata, and fascinating history.
